AG-3 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the AG-3 grade level:
• Reverse lettering is barely readable
• Rods in fasces do not show at all
• Mintmark is barely readable
• LIBERTY blends with rim
• Few details on Liberty's head

G-4 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the G-4 grade level:
• All of reverse lettering significantly blends with rim
• Other than a hint at the top or bottom, rods do not show any detail
• Mintmark is well worn but is clear
• Letter tops of LIBERTY blend with rim
• Hint of wing detail

G-6 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the G-6 grade level:
• Some reverse letter tops blend with the rim
• Portions of the outer rods begin to show detail
• Most letters of LIBERTY separte from rim, though gap is small
• Hint of wing detail

VG-8 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the VG-8 grade level:
• Obverse and reverse lettering is distinct from rim though gap is small
• Portions of the outer rods begin to show detail
• Faint details begin to show on wing

VG-10 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the VG-10 grade level:
• Lettering is distinct from rim though gap is small
• The center rods start to show faint detail
• Some wing detail is clear

F-12 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the F-12 grade level:
• Obverse and reverse lettering is clear
• Portions of all rods are clear
• Horizontal bands begin to come into focus
• Faint hairline begins to show on face
• Some wing detail is clear

F-15 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the F-15 grade level:
• Portions of all rods are clear, those at each end are nearly full
• Hint of diagonal bands
• Faint hairline begins to show on face
• Motto LIBERTY is bold

VF-20 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the VF-20 grade level:
• All lettering is bold
• Diagonal bands begin to come into focus
• Rods full except in area where they meet diagonal bands
• Some of hairline shows

VF-25 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the VF-25 grade level:
• Faint distinction between rods and centers of diagonal bands
• Some hair curls show
• Most of hairline shows, but the detail is flat
• Most deep wing detail is visible, but design is flat

VF-30 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the VF-30 grade level:
• Faint distinction between rods and centers of diagonal bands
• Diagonal bands are still lacking detail at a few spots
• Some fine wing detail starts to show

VF-35 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the VF-35 grade level:
• Most rods show distinctly against diagonal bands
• Diagonal bands are complete, but entirely flat at their center
• Some fine wing detail starts to show
• Hairline shows plainly, except by cheekbone

XF-40 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the XF-40 grade level:
• Some rods show boldly
• Diagonal bands are bold except still flat at center
• Wing is clear
• Hairline is clear, except by cheekbone

XF-45 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the XF-45 grade level:
• Most rods are bold, but center rod and its neighbor to viewer's right show some weakness
• Diagonal bands are bold except still flat at center
• Wing is clear
• Hairline is bold, except by cheekbone, which still lacks detail

AU-50 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the AU-50 grade level:
• Some mint luster remains
• Horizontal bands show clear wear
• Diagonal bands are bold except at center, where they are no longer flat, but shy of a designation of "bold"
• Hairline complete, but area around cheekbone is very flat
• Remainder of obverse and reverse is bold

AU-53 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the AU-53 grade level:
• Some mint luster remains
• All reverse details bold except horizontal bands still show light wear
• All obverse details bold except hairline which shows plainly around the cheekbone

AU-55 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the AU-55 grade level:
• Considerable mint luster may remain
• Horizontal bands still show light wear
• Remainder of reverse shows wear under magnification
• Obverse high points show light wear

AU-58 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the AU-58 level:
• Full or nearly full mint luster remains
• All details bold
• Light wear visible under magnification

MS-61 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-60/1 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster, but luster breaks due to issues
• Marking, abrasions, or other imperfections that clearly impact appearance
• Generally below average eye appeal

MS-62 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-62 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster
• Moderate level of marking or abrasions visible
• Average or below average eye appeal

MS-63 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-63 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster
• A few markings or abrasions visible
• Average eye appeal

MS-64 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-64 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster
• Light marking is visible to the naked eye
• Generally average or above average eye appeal

MS-65 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-65 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster
• Only very light marking is visible to the naked eye
• Above average eye appeal

MS-66 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-66 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster
• Very insignificant marking found under magnification
• Well above average eye appeal

MS-67 Mercury Dime

Primary considerations at the MS-67 grade level:
• No wear and full mint luster
• Nearly perfect, with only the most minor imperfections found under magnification
• An extremely attractive coin
