• Parts of all 4 digits readable, but most of date is blurry
• LIBERTY blends well into the rim
• No horn other than a base
• Most of reverse rim blends with motto or mintmark

G-6 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the G-6 grade level:
• Parts of all 4 digits readable, but some of date is blurry
• Letter tops of LIBERTY blend with rim
• No horn other than a base
• Parts of reverse rim blends with motto or mintmark

VG-8 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the VG-8 grade level:
• 4-digit date, but all numbers are flat and weak
• Letter tops of LIBERTY blend with rim
• Hints of a horn start to show
• Reverse rim just barely separates from motto and mintmark

VG-10 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the VG-10 grade level:
• 4-digit date, numbers reasonably clear, but still flat
• Some of LIBERTY is distinct from rim, other letter tops blend
• About 1/3 of horn shows

• LIBERTY is clearly distinct from rim

• Most reverse lettering and mimtmark show boldly

• Horn is complete except for tip which blends slightly at the front
• Most buffalo upper back detail is visible

XF-40 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the XF-40 grade level:
• Hints of luster may show
• All date digits bold, no longer flattened by wear
• All letters of LIBERTY are bold
• Horn completely full with tip, but details are still flat
• Only some buffalo head fur is visible

XF-45 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the XF-45 grade level:
• Faint luster may show
• All date digits bold, no longer flattened by wear
• All letters of LIBERTY are bold
• Horn completely full with tip, about 2/3 of it is bold
• Buffalo head fur is visible but weak
• Nearly all buffalo upper back detail is visible

AU-50 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the AU-50 grade level:
• Some mint luster remains
• Horn bold, yet buffalo head fur is missing some details
• All other details bold
• Light, even wear throughout

AU-53 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the AU-53 grade level:
• Some mint luster remains
• Horn bold, yet buffalo head fur is missing just a few fine details
• All other details bold
• Light wear visible on coin's high points

AU-55 Buffalo Nickel

Primary considerations at the AU-55 grade level:
• Considerable mint luster may remain
• All details bold
• Light wear visible under magnification

AU-58 Buffalo Nickel

• Full or nearly full mint luster remains
• All details bold
• Only select high points show light wear under magnification

MS-61 Buffalo Nickel

• Marking, abrasions, or other imperfections that clearly impact appearance
• Generally below average eye appeal
